This model of the water clock from Fez, Morocco, is on display at The Islamic Science and Technology museum in Istanbul.
The clock is the oldest existing water clock and was constructed in 1362. It was placed in the room of the astronomer of the Quarawiyin mosque in Fez, who was in charge of calculating the prayer times. The clock is extremely precise and it is a feast for the eyes with its beautiful design and ornaments.
The Islamic Science and Technology museum is devoted to preserving the scientific discoveries of Islamic scholars, of which there were many. Whilst the museum wouldn’t be on the top of my list of things to do in Istanbul, it reminds us of the great progress these scholars made in the fields of medicine, chemistry and astronomy. The museum features numerous models of paraphernalia from these and other areas and would be a good spot to hide from the rain or to warm up on a cold day. Great for model geeks.
